With the writing of "Caribbean" as its focus, the program shows how Michener selects his subjects, gathers information on which his works are based, how he works and feels about writing, history and the human condition including the grinding poverty of his youth that continues to drive him to succeed. Filmed in Pennsylvania, Mexico, the Virgin Islands and Jamaica, the program provides a warm portrait of a novelist who writes out of but not about his own life experience.
