Victory Gardens of WWII: The American Farmers Pitch InIn 1941 the Agricultural Department startled most Americans by suggesting that if they wanted fresh vegetables on their diner tables, they would have to plant Victory Gardens. By 1943 there were nearly 20 million Victory Gardens, producing a phenomenal 8 million tons of food and over 50% of all the fresh vegetables consumed in the US. These extraordinary efforts made all Americans feel like they were a part of the war effort. In actuality, they played a major role in winning the war and 'writing the peace.'
