This compilation is structured to represent a brief chronology, beginning with the words of John Brown after his capture for the raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859. Confederate Generals P.T. Beauregard and Robert E. Lee address their troops in 1861 and 1862, respectively. Lincoln dedicates the cemetery at Gettysburg and, in his second inaugural address, calls for an end to the war. Jefferson Davis encourages rebel soldiers in an 1864 address. General William Tecumseh Sherman explains martial law to Atlanta. Lee explains his 1865 surrender at Appomattox, the effective end of the war. Frederick Douglass speaks against Independence Day as a "sham" holiday in a nation that, for so long, espoused the practice of slavery.
