Shakers in America

In 1774 a small group of refugees from religious persecution in England settled near Albany, N.Y. These Shakers, as they were called by outsiders, founded one of the many Utopian societies of the 18th century based on celibacy and separation from the world. In their over 200 years in America, they have made enormous contributions to American art, design, architecture, and music as well as agriculture and industrial technology.
