Guadalcanal & The Shores Of Iwo JimaThe Japanese depended heavily on two Pacific islands to mount their aggressive air and naval attacks: Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Armed forces from the United States were called upon to wrest these islands from Japanese rule, and both times the call was answered. This program examines the battles, which were unusually heavy in casualties and suffering. But the U.S. flag still flew-most famously at Iwo Jima, the inspiration for the Marine Memorial.
