Operation Dragoon: The Allied Invasion of the South of France

Second only to the Normandy invasion, this controversial campaign came within an eyelash of being scrubbed. Originally planned to coincide with the D-Day invasion, instead it got "bogged-down" over military objectives. In the final analysis, it was a startling success.
