Rome: Out of the Darkness
The 150 years that followed 1420, when the popes returned to Rome from Avignon, saw the resurgence of Rome as a cultural center. Under the patronage of the popes, St. Peter's was built and decorated, art and music flourished, music of the Church changed from Gregorian chant to Palestrina. This was the time of Dufay, Josquin and Orlando di Lassus, when joy in music became joy in instruments and instrumental music became popular.
