He appeared on Broadway at the age of 12, and by 30 he was the most sought-after star in Hollywood. Norman Mailer revered him, Elizabeth Taylor loved him, and as an actor he was enormously successful. But as a man he was so tormented that he slowly killed himself with drugs and alcohol, eventually dying at age 45.
