Marriage of PocahontasEnglish colonists first settled on the Jamestown River in 1607. By the end of the summer, the colony was under attack. Starvation and Indian raids threatened its survival. However, an unexpected marriage between a colonist John Rolfe and the Indian Princess Pocahontas ended hostilities between the two races. Jamestown became the cornerstone of the English occupation of North America for the next 100 years.
