The western is the most uniquely American form of film and it has been a vital part of the motion picture industry from the very start. From The Great Train Robbery in 1903 to the present there have been more than four thousand movies made about the American West. They have gone beyond mere entertainment--they have made the West a universal fascination and they have built that fascination into a form of mythology.
