Mystery of the Lamb of God
One clue, more than 4,000 possible hiding places, and a gothic setting - sound like the stuff of a fictitious detective novel? This is the real-life scene of Karel Mortier's 40 year long investigation of a mystery that began in Ghent, Belgium in 1934. Mortier, the now retired former Chief of Police of Ghent, has made it his life's work to find the mysteriously stolen panel from one of the greatest and most controversial paintings in the world, the "Lamb of God". This famous altarpiece was created by Jan van Eyck, the innovative medieval Flemish painter of the 15th century, and has been the subject of devotion and mysticism throughout the centuries.
