Turin Shroud
Until 1357, no one had ever heard of the Shroud of Turin. That year, it turned up under mysterious circumstances in a remote village in France. The ancient piece of linen eerily bears the image of a man, and is believed by many to be the actual burial cloth of Jesus Christ. In 1898, Italian photographer Secundo Pia stunned the world when he discovered the clear imprint of a crucified man who had sustained injuries made by cruel whipping, crucifixion, a crown of thorns and a spear. In 1988, the venerable Cardinal Anastasio Ballestrero announced the unequivocal forgery of the Shroud due to the scientific test of carbon dating. British author Ian Wilson questions the process of carbon dating and other scientific research methods. But interestingly enough, he finds traces of the Shroud evident centuries long before its suggested forgery between 1260 and 1390.
